Mystery of the Modern Mystic Marvel

Boyd T. Appler - Starting at the front of my binders of throwing cards we find Boyd T. Appler a magician from the Washington/Baltimore area. Little is known of him and a search on Ask Alexander turns up his name once or twice. He is apparently part of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center as something on him is identified as being in "Box 3." He advertised himself as the "Modern Mystic Marvel." The design for the back was used by Bicycle from 1913 until 1939 when it was discontinued.

The back design is from Andrew Dougherty. It was used for the Climax series.

In 1942, Boyd applied for membership in the I.B.M. This was a sample of the card he used.

The Appler grave can be found at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, MD.
